Your Weekend in Wellen Park: Live Music, Movie Night & More (July 24–26)
One of the things I love most about living and working in the Wellen Park area is that there is always something going on — even in the middle of summer when a lot of Florida towns slow down. If you're looking for something to do this weekend, Downtown Wellen has you covered. Here's what's happening.
Friday Night: Live Music on the Great Lawn
The Downtown Wellen Music Series continues this Friday evening with a live band performing on the Solis Hall stage. This is one of my favorite recurring events in the community — there's no RSVP required, admission is free, and the atmosphere is exactly what you'd hope for on a warm summer night in Southwest Florida.
A few tips if you've never been:
Bring your own lawn chairs or blankets — the Great Lawn fills up with families, neighbors, and plenty of dogs, and everyone stakes out their spot early. Outside alcoholic beverages aren't permitted, but you can grab to-go drinks from the Downtown Wellen restaurants, which honestly is half the fun. Make an evening of it: dinner at one of the waterfront spots, then stroll over to the lawn for the show.
Saturday: Get Creative (or Get Moving)
Saturday morning, the free Zumba class returns to the Great Lawn in Downtown Wellen. It's put on in partnership with the Venice YMCA, it's open to all fitness levels, and there's no better way to start a Saturday than working up a sweat under the Heritage Tree before the afternoon heat rolls in.
If you're feeling artistic, The Artistic Flip Flop is hosting a batik workshop on Saturday. If you've never tried batik — it's a wax-and-dye fabric art — it's a fun, hands-on project and you leave with something you actually made. Great for a date, a friend outing, or a solo creative afternoon.
Sunday: Movie Night at CoolToday Park
Wrap up the weekend at CoolToday Park on Sunday with a showing of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie. If you have kids (or grandkids), this one's a no-brainer. Watching a movie inside a ballpark is one of those experiences that makes this community feel special — and it's a great way to beat the July heat with the family.
Why Weekends Like This Matter
I talk to a lot of people who are considering a move to Venice, North Port, or the West Villages area, and the question I hear most often isn't about square footage or floor plans. It's: "What's it actually like to live there?"
Weekends like this one are the answer. Free concerts on the lawn. Fitness classes with your neighbors. Art workshops. Movie nights at a spring training ballpark five minutes from your front door. Wellen Park was designed to be more than a collection of neighborhoods — it's a genuine community, and the events calendar proves it week after week.
And there's more coming: line dancing returns to the Great Lawn on Tuesday, and there's a ticketed show at Solis Hall next Friday night if you want to plan ahead.
If you're visiting this weekend and find yourself thinking, "I could live here" — you're not the first. I'd be happy to show you around. Reach out anytime.
See you on the lawn!
— Scott
